There are excellent downloadable Pixelator video tutorials available for Macs from Amazon that are much much better and at a tiny fraction of the cost of this book.

The great thing about these videos is that you can actually see the tools being used and some tricks on how to use them effectively.

The Good This book is handy, if you have the patience, to step through each item in the Pixelmator menu. It forces one to at least be exposed to the various tools, even if their functions and idiosyncrasies are not throughly explained.

I also thought the brief intro to various basic concepts of digital images pixels vs dots per inch, etc was very good. My review of Learning Pixelmator by Mark Stagi is a bit mixed. Although facile with computers – I knew nothing about using the Pixelmator program at the time I bought this.

That said – Pixelmator is a surprisingly complex program that does require time to master it. I am not yet there. While virtually all the tools in the program seem to be covered in Mark Stagi’s kindle book – some of the step-to-step Do-this first-this next is lost in the relatively concise text.

This is fine if you are already an expert with the program – but required me to initially look elsewhere ie, to some videos to understand the basics for using Pixelmator. My kindle fire normally facilitates instant retrieval of key information by search in the drop-down Contents. Unfortunately – only the major chapter headings are listed here. As a result – I found it difficult at times when I wanted to search for a quick review of a particular tool. The Index does list all effects – but adding Subheadings to the Contents would have been very helpful in facilitating how to find brief review of a specific tool, which is indeed my main use for this book.

That said – the Author writes well – and while as a beginner I would have preferred a more detailed step-by-step process – there are lots of well done figures. The Author has LOTS to teach – so I definitely feel this kindle book is well-worth-its-money and a GOOD adjunct on the subject with advantage of being portable anywhere given kindle format. But most beginners will need something else to learn Pixelmator. I am not very “techy” so I don’t possess the ability to just click around in a computer program.

When I got the Pixelmator program I was baffled by all of the choices. I watched the tutorials online over and over and some of the features still were difficult.

This book took me through some steps that made my photos go from regular to amazing. Some of the features are fun to play with. Knowing what I can do with layering gave me a whole new perspective on photography. Even if you make your photo all black and white there are highlights and ways to make certain eye-catching elements stand out. Make the sky a little bluer and the grass a little greener or add a shadow or some light to an element to give it a little drama.

This book goes through that and it helped me make some great scenery photos into art on my walls. I am Ed’s wife and this book is for me.

We could either fit this fire unharmed but inside the circle, or go much more crazy.

Set the starting point somewhere below the fire first. When you get a big circle that should be big press ok, then just use transform controls to change it to the size of the hole.

I told my instructor at the Apple store about my purchase and he told me that the newer version covers everything that 2. He also said that I made a good choice by buying the book. I also purchased the tutorial from the App store but since this is my first experience with this type of editing program I found the tutorial a bit beyond my capabilities. Now that I have the book, I can understand and work with what the tutorial is explaining.

Plus, IF I have a problem, its very easy to go to the page in the book that covers what I need to know. I like having the book handy to help me along.. I recommend anyone purchasing the book even if you have the newer version of Pixelmator. I was looking for a hands on follow me tutorial which this book does not accomplish, contrary to the pre purchase description of this book. For the new user, visuals are better than descriptions of what to do, since the description inadvertently leaves some of the little but indispensable details out.

For this book, I found assistance from YouTube was necessary, even for some of the basic tasks. For many of the visuals the pictures were too small.

I purchased the kindle version as I thought the hard copy seemd expensive for what it was. I was used to photoshop and thought I would be able to use Pixelmator more easily than I did at first. It is quite different. The kindle edition certainly helped to explain what the tools were and did but until I sat down and actually worked through the various tools and effects, it was a bit confusing.

There is help online so what I purchased was initially helpful but limited. One person found this helpful. If you are ok using Photoshop then this software is a good affordable 2nd choice. This book helped me produce a fairly acceptable poster. More attention could be given to advice about saving work, very different process from Photoshop.

Book worth getting. A well laid out starter booklet if you want something that is not online. However the software has recently been substantially enhanced and the content does not reflect this. A worthwhile purchase if you don’t like to do your software learning through youtube videos! The book gives details of what each tool does and how to use it as well as all the other effects, which can be created. Colour pictures would have been better, but when editing, you can see what your own picture looks like and make your own judgement.

After reading these two reviews I did search for another book on Pixelmator, even going into a well known book store and asking them to search for one. It seems this is the only book available so you either take it or leave it. I have given four stars due to the quality of the printing of the pictures. I’m very pleased, it is exactly as described.
